Able-Bodied

I was recently asked which part of my identity identifies me the most out of ability, gender, and age. I could not believe the three were even in the same category.

Obviously, ability is most important to me. No matter what other identities you may have or even set backs you may face, your ability is something you can control. When I am able to do something, it increases my life experience, unlike superficial labels like age and gender. See, the issue with labeling yourself with age and gender is that they can hold you back. That is why I do not actively think of myself as a 22-year-old woman (although I know I am), but I think of myself as an able-bodied person. That is why I have no problem leading a 40-year-old man or 26-year-old woman in my work; I believe in my abilities and the fact that I can lead those people regardless of age or gender.

Jewelry

I spent last evening making some ADORABLE foodie charms out of clay...and I must tell you, it was so fun. I love dealing with all the colors! And now the next part of the project will be turning these into charm bracelets, so stay tuned.

Now speaking of cool jewelry designs, my friends at Taglee are changing the game. Look at these beauties!

Things You Probably Didn’t Know About the Publishing Industry

When it comes to the publishing industry, I have pretty much seen it all: self-publishing, traditional publishing, and everything in between. I self-published my first book in high school, had a book traditionally published in college, and started my own publishing company in grad school. I think about how much I didn’t know about the industry when I was just a starry-eyed high schooler writing a book, and when I talk to people about publishing now, there are misconceptions about the industry I hear over and over.

The Modern World of Work

I love the future. I will say it again and again, because I am so thankful that I grew up in this great generation where there are now more options than just a traditional 9-5 job. The fact that I can work in my PJs or at the beach is an amazing innovation. Even greater, though, is that I have the ability to do creative work, work that truly makes me happy.

My work is not all just in one area, but in multiple areas, so I can explore my many interests and never get bored. I have a publishing company, GenZ Publishing, where I follow my passion of reading and helping other young writers to get published. GenZ has about 40 signed authors and four remote interns. I have only met a handful of these amazing folks in person. The rest are all people, like me, taking advantage of the many great opportunities the digital world has to offer them. We have had four Amazon bestsellers and are bringing GenZ global notice, based upon our hard work and motivation…all done from our keyboards.

I also freelance write and edit content for a number of companies. I have been doing this since high school. See, I never had a ‘traditional job’ in school. Instead, I would work on my laptop on freelance sites like Fiverr, editing short stories and blog posts. I have since moved on to other clients and work, but those humble beginnings really got me into the world of online entrepreneurship. I also sing and create music for freelance clients and in online collaborations, do voiceovers, and have a couple of blogs.

I am also a graduate student and have a website dedicated to small businesses for my university. I can easily balance this with my schedule because of its flexibility. I can’t fathom how only a couple decades ago, people may have had all these interests, but would have not had the freedom to pursue them (it’s kind of heartbreaking). I appreciate how fortunate I am that I have these interests AND the ability to pursue them and make a living at the same time.  All paths of my life are connected at once, and I love it.

So what does a typical day look like for me? I wish I could answer that, but EVERY single day is completely different. Some days I will be so consumed with writing articles or editing a young person’s book or singing an original song that I will be unable to do really anything else. Other days, though, I hang out with my Maltese Lester or take a spa day with my mom before working on spreading the word about GenZ books or writing some new blog posts or even making jewelry which I also sell online. There is no room for boredom in this lifestyle. Most nights I will stay up until 2:00 or 3:00 working on my businesses, because they are my passions. It is a great mix of work becoming passion projects.

I cannot advocate for digital entrepreneurship and the gig economy enough. They provide an incredible freedom like nothing else. I am so thankful to be a GenZ Millennial Lady.
